Cayman Brac Tourist Information
Visit this friendly island and explore above and below the surface
On Cayman Brac (Brac is Gaelic for Bluff), there is still time for a friendly smile, a pleasant conversationand a genuine concern for another's well being. Only 89 miles from Grand Cayman, this sister island is a world apart. There are no shopping malls, fast food restaurants or large business districts. The Brac, as it is often called by locals, has a friendly close-knit community, and the priorities are different here for the 2000 or so residents. Brackers are a dynamic set of seafaring residents whose women in days gone by cared for their homes and families while their men-folk were at sea.
The cigar shaped island is only 12 miles long and a just over a mile wide. The Brac offers visitors natural beauty, fine snorkeling and fishing, some of the worlds best diving, comfortable overnight accommodations, good food, an endearing charm, enduring tranquillity and traditional friendliness that combine to create a gentle way of life that most of us long for. Cayman Brac is one island you will not soon forget.
Take the time to tour the Cayman Brac Museum, browse around the numerous quaint shops, or ask directions to Long Beach and view the ancient rock formations and fossils. The island offers fine dining and there are a variety of restaurants offering caymanian cuisine to choose from.
Diving and Fishing
Diving is the main attraction bringing people to the island, and as The Brac is relatively isolated, the reefs are teeming with marine life of all descriptions. Divers have the pleasure of enjoying many breath taking dive adventures unlike any others. The snorkeling and fishing on the island are also excellent. Here stories of the one that got away are few. This is because people who come to enjoy the fishing are rarely, if ever, disappointed.
Nature calling
There are several natural attractions on the Cayman Brac. Its majestic 140 foot high bluff is honeycombed with several pirate caves that merit exploring, and it sustains a spectacular variety of plant life, including silver thatch trees, saguaro cacti and century plants. If you're for the birds, you've come to the right place. The bluff is home to rare parrots, brown boobies, man o'war birds, nightingales, peregrine falcons, little yellow bananaquits, mocking birds and more. There are nesting colonies of the brown booby and a walk across Cayman Brac is always rewarding. There is also a Parrot Reserve on Cayman Brac. A new 3/4 mile looped nature trail gives the residents and visitors an opportunity to see, enjoy and learn about the natural environment of Cayman Brac. If you tire of diving, fishing, hiking and the like, you can relax in solitude on one of Cayman Brac's quiet beaches.
Getting Here
There is no ferry service to the island, so the only way to get here is via air. Cayman Airways flies several times a day to and from Grand Cayman, sometimes with a short stop on Little Cayman to collect or drop off passengers. Most of the hotels on the island offer an airport pick-up service. One of their staff will greet you at the terminal building, collect your bags, and transport you to your accommodations.
Where to stay
Cayman Brac offers a number of small dive resorts and guest houses, as well as Brac Reef Beach Resort, which is the premiere resort on the island. All meals are served buffet style at Brac Reef Beach Resort's restaurant, and dive packages are available as well.
